There are so many things I want to say about Oxford, but so little time to say them!
I guess I will first give some interesting facts I have learned about the city and university. Oxford has more published authors per square mile than any other city in the world. These include Lewis Carroll, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, Percy Shelley, and Jonathan Swift. Perfect place to study literature! Many scenes from Harry Potter were also filmed here.
At my college, Christ Church, the bell in the bell tower (Tom) rings 101 times just before 9 pm. This used to let the students know they had to be back inside the gates by the time the last bell rang. Christ Church is very old fashioned and only let women study there starting in the 1980s. We say grace in Latin before dinner every night!
I’m really glad I’m taking the Lewis Carroll course since he lived here almost all his life, and my tutor really is an expert. We’ve seen Carroll’s old rooms, where he took Alice Liddell and told her the story, and the treacle well. My tutor has some of the first editions of his books, including a book owned and signed by the real Alice. He actually has over 6,000 Carroll related books which he built a special house, basically a library, to keep them in. People from all over the world come to his house to research there.
Time to go eat dinner! Thanks for reading!
